Rating: PG13

Lefty in this movie: Whoopi Goldberg

Other actors: Danny Glover, Akosua Busia, and Oprah Winfrey

Director: Steven Spielberg

Total time: 154 minutes (2 hours 34 minutes)

Today, we are featuring a review from one of our users who also happens to be my sister, Louise. The following is what she thought about Steven Spielberg’s first serious movie:

Extraordinary, exhilarating, magnificent… words like these come nowhere close to describing it. Power. IT is power that is inherent even in color itself. Something about the color purple, no matter how subtle, always finds a way to silently scream and say, even if in a whisper, “I’m here.”

The story, with the abundant portrayal of human vices, has a way of communicating the true essence of our existence. It demonstrates the power love exhibits, while showing the weakness hate contains. The color purple has an energy. An energy difficult to explain…it is better if your own eyes drift about and analyze the inherent energy upon the screen and see Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) swing amiss the sunflowers and her sister, Nettie (Akosua Busia), hum the melody of…THE COLOR PURPLE.

4 stars

Rating: PG13

Lefty in this movie: Angelina Jolie

Other actors: Brad Pitt, Vince Vaughn, and Adam Brody

Director: Doug Liman

Angelina Jolie is the left-handed actress we are headlining in the first review at lefthandedactors.com. With explosions, guns, beautiful people, and great on-screen interaction between the leads, it is no wonder this movie was a box office hit.

John and Jane Smith (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) are not your average married couple. They are each professional hit men working for competing organizations. The twist is that each is so caught up in his or her own career that neither knows of the other’s true identity. That is, until they are each hired for the same hit. The hit, Benjamin Danz (Adam Brody), is smart-mouthed and galling, but he does add some amusement towards the end of the movie, where John and Jane are threatening to torture him or even kill him if he does not give them the information they want.

None of the characters match up to Vince Vaughn who plays Eddie, John’s best friend. Vaughn is a type of comic relief in a comedy-filled movie. Even though, he has little screen time, watching the entire movie is worth the few scenes he is in bashing Jane Smith for trying to kill her husband or flirting with a waitress.

This film is your typical action movie, filled with guns, too many bullets that manage to miss the main characters, and even the methodical chase scene, but it is wrapped up in giddy way with the I-love-you-but-want-to-kill-you humor and perfect chemistry from Pitt and Jolie.

There are two types of people who would like this movie — those who like the big blockbuster action-packed movies and those who will laugh at its many references to real relationships. I happen to be both so I am giving this movie four stars.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is currently on DVD available at a good price from Amazon.com in Wide Screen, Full Screen, and UMD Mini for PSP.
